Do you currently have Landmark shingles, but need to know the warranties? CertainTeed’s Landmark shingle is one of the best architectural shingles available in residential roofing. While the quality of the shingle is one thing, the protections CertainTeed provides are also hard to beat.  The problem is that understanding the warranties that come with Landmark shingles can get technical and confusing. Unfortunately, you can’t truly feel confident in your shingle decision without knowing how their performance and benefits are backed up.  **For over 35 years, Bill Ragan Roofing has broken down complex roofing industry information to help homeowners understand the ins and outs of their investment.** So, let’s look at the warranties that come with CertainTeed's Landmark shingle.  By the end of this article, you’ll learn: - What do CertainTeed Landmark shingles offer? (Quick overview of benefits) - What are the warranties on CertainTeed Landmark shingles? - What’s the SureStart PLUS™ extended warranty on CertainTeed Landmark shingles? ## What do CertainTeed Landmark shingles offer? [**CertainTeed’s Landmark® shingle**](https://www.certainteed.com/residential-roofing/products/landmark/)** is an architectural shingle with a multi-layered design on a tough fiberglass base and protective outer layer.** It’s a great option for homeowners who want an affordable, durable, aesthetically pleasing roofing option. ![certainteed landmark architectural asphalt shingles](https://www.billraganroofing.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Landmark.jpg?width=600&height=400&name=Landmark.jpg)(Image provided by certainteed.com) CertainTeed’s Landmark shingles offer:  - 21 color options (availability varies by location) - Class 3 impact rating - Algae resistance - Tear resistance - Class A Fire-Resistance Rating (highest rating available) - Class F Wind-Resistance (110 mph, upgradable to 130 mph) CertainTeed’s Landmark asphalt shingle is a high-quality, reliable choice. And what makes them even more reliable is the warranties CertainTeed provides to back them up.  ## What are the warranties on CertainTeed Landmark shingles? CertainTeed provides multiple warranties on their Landmark shingle. **While there is a “standard” warranty, there are others that cover something more specific. ** Let’s look at the following warranties that CertainTeed provides with their Landmark shingles: - Lifetime limited transferable warranty - SureStart™ - StreakFighter® algae-resistance warranty - Wind-resistance warranty ### Lifetime limited transferable warranty **The main warranty CertainTeed provides on Landmark and all their shingles is the prorated limited lifetime material warranty for manufacturer defects. **This warranty pays to repair, replace, or clean any defective shingles for the roof’s lifetime. Just know “lifetime” means for as long as the original buyer owns the home the roof was installed on. However, there are two different variations of the warranty.  If the shingle has a “LifetimeA” limited warranty label, CertainTeed covers the shingle replacement, roof tear-off, metal work, flashing, and disposal costs. On the other hand, a “LifetimeB” limited warranty label will only cover the defective shingles. Landmark shingles are a “LifetimeB” limited warranty, so this warranty will only cover the shingle portion of the cost to replace a defective roof.  ### SureStart™ While CertainTeed’s main warranty is the limited lifetime warranty, the first 10 years are covered under the SureStart™ warranty. **During the non-prorated SureStart™ protection period, CertainTeed covers 100% of the labor and material costs to replace defective materials (for a reasonable price). ** They’ll also cover costs for flashing, metal work, tear-off, and disposal if a shingle has the “LifetimeA” label. Unfortunately, the standard SureStart™** **warranty for Landmark shingles won’t qualify for this.  But no matter what, only the shingles are covered once the SureStart period ends and starts prorating by 1/600 per month. ### StreakFighter® algae-resistance warranty As a roof ages, [black streaks caused by algae growth](https://www.billraganroofing.com/blog/what-black-streaks-roof) form on the shingles. To help avoid the black streaks as long as possible, CertainTeed applies their StreakFighter® to all of the shingles. **Landmark shingles come with a 25-year StreakFighter® algae-resistance warranty. **This means CertainTeed will have to pay to clean or replace any algae-impacted shingles if they’re still in the warranty period.  However, the 25-year algae-resistance warranty requires installing CertainTeed’s algae-resistant (AR) hip and ridge shingle accessories as well.  Without the accessories, coverage is limited to 10 years from the date of installation.  ### Wind-resistance warranty All CertainTeed shingles come with a wind warranty to protect against [wind damage or shingle blow-off](https://www.billraganroofing.com/blog/how-spot-wind-damage-roof) caused by high-velocity winds. The wind speed a shingle can handle is determined by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials).  **With that in mind, CertainTeed Landmark shingles have a basic 15-year 110-mph wind-resistance warranty.** However, it can be upgraded to 130 mph if you use CertainTeed’s [starter shingles](https://www.billraganroofing.com/blog/what-starter-shingles) and hip and ridge capping.  This means they’ll provide replacement shingles if any shingles or hip/ridge accessories are damaged by wind while under warranty. Just know that it will be voided if the shingles aren’t installed correctly, even during the warranty period. ## What’s the SureStart PLUS™ extended warranty on CertainTeed Landmark shingles? The standard SureStart™ warranty period is great, but the prorating begins as soon as 10 years pass. **Fortunately, CertainTeed also offers a SureStart PLUS™ extended warranty that pushes the coverage to 20 to 50 years.**  To get a SureStart PLUS™ extended warranty, you must get a roof system with [specified components](https://www.billraganroofing.com/blog/what-replaced-roof-replacement) and the Landmark shingles installed by a CertainTeed-certified contractor. However, the roofing contractor’s certification level determines the length and what’s covered.  Below is an infographic of the different levels of SureStart™ PLUS extended warranties: ![certainteed sure start plus warranties infographic](https://www.billraganroofing.com/hs-fs/hubfs/CertainTeedSureStartPLUSWarrantiesInfographic.png?width=800&height=534&name=CertainTeedSureStartPLUSWarrantiesInfographic.png) CertainTeed’s SureStart™ PLUS extended warranty is one of the best in the roofing industry. So, make sure you hire a roofing contractor with at least a 3-star level certification to install your roof. ## What are the best CertainTeed shingles?
