Landmark vs. Landmark PRO: Which CertainTeed Shingle is Better?

Written by Bill Ragan | Mar 6, 2023

CertainTeed is one of the most popular asphalt shingle brands in the country. They offer a wide range of quality asphalt shingles to fit any budget and look, but two are more popular than the rest.

These are the Landmark asphalt shingles and the Landmark PRO asphalt shingles. Both are great options and are popular among homeowners, but is one better than the other?

For over 30 years, the team at Bill Ragan Roofing has provided homeowners with transparent advice so they can make the right decisions. That’s why I’ll compare Landmark and Landmark PRO CertainTeed shingles to help you determine which is right for you

In this article, I’ll give you a breakdown of each CertainTeed shingle and what they offer. After that, I’ll summarize the information and answer the question of which one is better.

Landmark vs. Landmark Pro: What’s the difference?

Besides the name, Landmark and Landmark PRO asphalt shingles have quite a bit in common on the surface. But once you dig deeper, the differences start to show.

Let’s learn the key differences between Landmark asphalt shingles and Landmark PRO asphalt shingles.

Landmark architectural asphalt shingles

CertainTeed’s Landmark® architectural asphalt shingle is the most popular asphalt shingle our customers choose.

This shingle offers a dual-layered design with the dimension a cedar shake roof provides. Landmark shingles are also the heaviest and offer the widest array of color options in their class.

Below are performance perks that CertainTeed’s Landmark asphalt shingles offer:

  • Certified as meeting the industry's toughest third-party (UL) manufacturing quality standards
  • Dual-layered construction provides extra protection from the elements
  • Class A fire-resistance rating

All Landmark shingles include CertainTeed's lifetime-limited warranty to back up this performance. But that’s just one type of warranty they come with.

Landmark asphalt shingles also come with the following warranties:

  • 10-year SureStart™ warranty (covers 100% replacement and labor costs due to manufacturing defects)
  • 25-year StreakFighter® warranty against streaking and discoloration caused by airborne algae
  • 15-year, 110 mph wind-resistance warranty

CertainTeed’s Landmark asphalt shingle line is a high-quality, reliable choice and, most importantly, affordable. There’s a reason Landmark shingles are incredibly popular with our customers.

Landmark PRO architectural asphalt shingles

CertainTeed's Landmark PRO architectural asphalt shingles are the next step up from Landmark shingles. They offer the quality and reliability you can expect from the basic Landmark line.

However, Landmark PRO asphalt shingles provide greater durability and offer Maximum Definition colors. Like Landmark, they also have two laminated layers to replicate the dimensional appearance of a cedar shake roof.

But Landmark PRO shingles are actually thicker, which is where the increased durability comes from. Like Landmark, Landmark PRO shingles offer:

  • Certified as meeting the industry's toughest third-party (UL) manufacturing quality standards
  • Class A fire-resistance rating
  • Dual-layered construction provides extra protection from the elements

Like most CertainTeed shingles, Landmark PRO shingles include CertainTeed’s lifetime-limited transferable warranty. Other warranties that these CertainTeed shingles offer are:

  • 30-year StreakFighter® warranty
  • 10-year SureStart™ protection (covers 100% replacement and labor costs due to manufacturing defects)
  • 15-year 110 mph wind-resistance warranty

While more expensive, Landmark PRO architectural asphalt shingles offer the same peace of mind that Landmark shingles. However, they are still affordable and increase your home’s aesthetics while offering extra durability.

Are Landmark shingles or Landmark PRO shingles better?

Now you know the key differences between Landmark and Landmark PRO. Both types of CertainTeed shingles are great choices, but which one is better?

Landmark offers almost the same amount of protection (warranties), but Landmark PRO offers a longer algae streak warranty. On top of the boosted streak warranty, Landmark PRO offers more colors with higher resolution and is more durable than Landmark.

17 Max Def color options

Considering all this information, Landmark PRO is the better CertainTeed asphalt shingle. There’s a reason the “PRO” was added to Landmark PRO, and it shows in its offerings.

This does make Landmark PRO more expensive than the standard Landmark asphalt shingle. However, it’s still an affordable asphalt shingle.

Just know it’s important to choose the one that’s right for you, even though I say Landmark PRO is the better option. Landmark shingles are still a good quality product if you’re on a tighter budget and don’t want to spend more on the PRO series.

However, making the extra investment in Landmark PRO asphalt shingles is worth it for the increased durability alone.

How much does an asphalt shingle roof cost?

Now you know Landmark PRO is the “better” CertainTeed asphalt shingle when compared to Landmark. But remember, you must pick the one that’s right for you and your budget.

Unfortunately, I can’t give you the cost for each shingle due to the fluctuation of material prices. The pricing also depends on suppliers in your area and the product’s availability.

However, I can give you an idea of the cost of a full asphalt shingle roof replacement. This will help you understand the budget needed in general, so you can choose the right CertainTeed shingle when getting estimates from roofing contractors

Since 1990, the team at Bill Ragan Roofing has replaced thousands of asphalt roofs in Nashville and surrounding Middle Tennessee areas. We’re even certified by CertainTeed to provide the best warranties possible.
