Print/Save as PDF

Interested in CertainTeed's Landmark line of shingles? Are you trying to decide between the standard Landmark option or the premium Landmark PRO?

CertainTeed is one of the most recognized asphalt shingle brands in the country, and their Landmark line is the best in my opinion. These asphalt shingles fit any budget and look, but also have unmatched durability.

However, many homeowners don't understand the key differences between Landmark and Landmark PRO. Both are great options and high-quality options, but which one is right for you?

For over 35 years, Bill Ragan Roofing has provided homeowners with transparent advice so they can make the right decisions. So, let's compare Landmark and Landmark PRO CertainTeed shingles to ensure you make the right choice.

In this article, I’ll quickly breakdown the basics of each shingle and what they offer. After that, I'll do an unbiased comparison to help you decide which one is right for you.

Landmark vs. Landmark Pro: What’s the difference?

Besides the name, Landmark and Landmark PRO asphalt shingles have quite a bit in common on the surface. But once you dig deeper, there are subtle differences that matter to homeowners.

Let’s learn the key differences between Landmark asphalt shingles and Landmark PRO asphalt shingles.

Landmark architectural asphalt shingles

CertainTeed’s Landmark® architectural asphalt shingle is their most popular shingle line for residential roofing. With a multi-layered design, tough fiberglass base, and protective outer layer, they qualify for a UL 2218 Class 3 Impact Resistance rating.

CertainTeed offers the widest array of color options with 21 (availability varies by location) across all manufactures for their Landmark shingle. So, you're guaranteed to find a style and color that fits your home's look.

Colors are great, but the performance is what wins over roofers who prefer CertainTeed's Landmark shingle line.

CertainTeed Landmark Shingle Performance Features

StreakFighter® algae resistance
Class 3 Impact-Resistance Rating
Class A Fire-Resistance Rating (highest rating available)(availability varies by location)
Class F Wind-Resistance (110 mph)
NailTrak® extra-wide nailing area for accurate installation

CertainTeed’s Landmark shingle line is a high-quality, reliable choice and, most importantly, affordable. There’s a reason Landmark shingles are an incredibly popular choice for many homeowners, including our customers.

Landmark PRO architectural asphalt shingles

CertainTeed's Landmark PRO architectural asphalt shingles are the "premium version" the Landmark shingle line. Like Landmark, they have a multi-layered design, tough fiberglass base, and protective outer layer to achieve the Class 3 Impact-Resistance rating.

However, Landmark PRO shingles are a little heavier and thicker. Other than that, the only big difference is the 24 Maximum Definition colors (availability varies by location).

The Max Def colors come with a richer mixture of surface granules to provide a more robust color palate. However, some homeowners actually think the contrast is too much.

Like Landmark, Landmark PRO has CertainTeed's patented performance features.

StreakFighter® algae resistance
Class 3 Impact-Resistance Rating
Class A Fire-Resistance Rating (highest rating available)(availability varies by location)
Class F Wind-Resistance (110 mph)
NailTrak® extra-wide nailing area for accurate installation

Landmark PRO are considered the premium option, so this line is more expensive than Landmark. However, they are still affordable and increase your home’s aesthetics with higher contrast colors.

Are Landmark shingles or Landmark PRO shingles better?

Now you know the key differences between CertainTeed Landmark and Landmark PRO shingles. You can't go wrong with either, but let's dig deeper into the things that matter the most for homeowners.

Let's compare Landmark and Landmark PRO on:

  • Warranties
  • Durability
  • Cost
  • Colors

Warranties

CertainTeed provides a variety of warranties for all their shingles. They all come with basic a lifetime-limited transferable warranty.

However, the others they offer are:

  • SureStart™ protection (covers 100% costs to replace due to manufacturing defects)
  • StreakFighter® algae-resistance warranty
  • Wind-resistance warranty

The table below compares these warranties for Landmark and Landmark PRO

Landmark Warranties

Landmark PRO Warranties

Lifetime-limited transferable warranty   Lifetime-limited transferable warranty
 10-year SureStart™ protection period  10-year SureStart™ protection period
 25-year StreakFighter® warranty  30-year StreakFighter® warranty
15-year 110 mph wind warranty (upgradable to 160 mph)  15-year 110 mph wind warranty (upgradable to 160 mph)

Key takeaway: Landmark and Landmark PRO come with same warranties, but Landmark PRO has a slightly longer algae streak warranty.

Durability

Both Landmark and Landmark PRO both have the Class 3 rating, which means they're durable. However, Landmark PRO shingles are a little heavier and thicker.

So, they do offer a little more durability. The problem is that it's not enough of a difference to quantify or stand behind, which is why they don't have a higher rating than standard Landmark.

Key takeaway: Landmark and Landmark PRO are very durable shingles, but Landmark PRO can technically offer more durability in situations.

Colors

Color selection is always in the eye of the beholder and greatly varies based on the specific home's style. When it comes to numbers, Landmark (21) and Landmark PRO (24) have a very large selection compared to other shingle manufactures.

However, it's up to every individual homeowner to determine if the robust color palate Max Def provides is a good match. In fact, most of the colors are the same, it's just that Landmark PRO comes with the Max Def option.

Key Takeaway: When it comes to colors, Landmark and Landmark PRO are comparable in options. However, Landmark PRO's Max Def selection offers higher contrast options.

Cost

Remember, Landmark PRO are the premium version of Landmark shingles. So, they're more expensive, but just slightly.

If you’re on a tighter budget, you won't find a better option than the standard Landmark shingles. However, if you like the Max Def colors and want a little longer algae-resistance warranty, Landmark PRO is still an affordable option.

Key takeaway: Landmark PRO is more expensive than Landmark, but your budget and style choices are the key deciding factors to keep in mind.

How much does a CertainTeed asphalt shingle roof cost?

Now you know how Landmark compares to Landmark PRO on everything, from warranties, durability, colors, and cost. They're both great options.

So, pick the one that’s right for your home's style and your budget. Unfortunately, I can’t give you the cost for each shingle due to the fluctuation of material prices.

The pricing also depends on suppliers in your area and the product’s availability. However, I can give you an idea of the cost of a full asphalt shingle roof replacement.

This will help you understand the budget needed in general, so you can choose the right CertainTeed shingle when getting estimates from roofing contractors
