Is Adding a Metal Accent to Your Roof Replacement Worth It?

Installing a metal roof system over your entire home is an expensive purchase most homeowners can’t afford. But the great thing about metal is that it’s a versatile roofing material.

The versatility means it can be installed pretty much anywhere on your roof. Homeowners take advantage of this by adding metal accents to their roof replacement.

But a frequent question I get asked is, “Yeah, it looks great. But is it really worth the investment?” Let’s figure that out together.

For over 30 years, Bill Ragan Roofing has provided homeowners with unbiased and honest roofing information to make the best decisions. To continue this tradition, I’ll help you determine if adding a metal accent is a good idea for you.

This article covers the following:

  • What is a metal accent for a roof?
  • Is adding a metal accent to your roof worth it?
  • How much will it cost to add a metal roof accent to your roof replacement?

What is a metal accent for a roof?

A metal accent is simply a metal roof installed on certain areas of your roof to increase the overall curb appeal. The great thing about a metal accent is that it goes with every type of roofing material

Most homeowners use metal accents over front, side, or back porches. But you can also use metal for arches, bay windows, and other smaller areas.

Just know that the recommended type of metal roof for accent purposes is a standing seam metal roof. While it is the more expensive of the two types, it’s a higher quality material, offers a better warranty, and provides more curb appeal than a screw down metal roof.

Is adding a metal accent to your roof replacement worth it?

In my opinion, adding a metal accent to your roof is worth the investment for homeowners who really care about their home’s curb appeal. As I said, homeowners choose to add a metal accent over front porches, side porches, back porches, bay windows, and more.

You’ll even pick the color that best accents your home and the rest of your roof. But if you want to take it to another level, you can get a copper metal roof system for accent purposes.

Just know that adding a metal accent has a big impact on the price of your roof replacement. So, while I say it’s worth it, it honestly won’t be a realistic option for many homeowners.

At the end of the day, it’s up to your budget and if increasing the curb appeal for your roof replacement is important to you.

How much will it cost to add a metal roof accent to your roof replacement?

As I said, adding a metal accent won’t be a realistic option for most homeowners. But how much will it cost so you can determine if it’s an option for you?

Just know that it’s impossible to give you an exact price for any roofing project because of the multitude of cost factors. So, the number below won’t be 100% accurate.

However, it does give you a good idea of the budget you’ll need to add a standing seam metal roof accent to your home.

A 24 gauge steel standing seam metal roof costs around $12.00 to $15.00 per square foot. Where you fall in that price range depends on how complex the roof is, including the size, the number of valleys, penetrations, facets, your roof’s pitch, and more.

For comparison, you can expect to pay around three times more than the most popular roofing material on the market, architectural asphalt shingles. This is a massive price difference, which is why most homeowners avoid adding a metal roof accent.

But if you have the budget and want to take your home’s curb appeal to the next level, adding a metal accent to your roof replacement is well worth it.

Is adding a metal accent right for you?

Now you know what a metal roof accent is, if it’s worth the investment, and an idea of how much it’ll cost. As I said, adding a metal accent to your roof won’t be an option for most homeowners.

But it's worth the investment if you have the budget and care about your home's curb appeal. Just know that I never recommended breaking your budget.

So, if money is tight or you’re already concerned about paying for a new roof, it’s probably not the best idea to invest in a metal roof accent. But at the end of the day, it’s your decision.
