Is Choosing a Shingle Brand or Roofing Contractor More Important?

Need a new roof? Are you dead set on or being pushed towards a specific shingle brand?
The shingle and manufacturer have a big impact on a new roof. However, some homeowners are so dead set on a shingle brand or specific shingle that they don’t pay attention to other important decisions.
This is especially true when it comes to hiring a roofing contractor. Unfortunately, being dead set on a shingle brand without listening to recommendations can lead to being taken advantage of or a poor-quality roof.
That’s why it’s crucial to understand what you should care about first and foremost when you start the roof replacement process.
For over 35 years, Bill Ragan Roofing has given homeowners the power to make informed roofing decisions with transparent advice. So, let’s break down the importance of the shingle brand versus the roofing contractor you hire.
By the end of this article, you’ll have the answers to:
- How does the shingle brand impact your roof replacement?
- How does a roofing contractor impact your roof replacement?
- Should you care more about the shingle brand or roofing contractor?
- Why do roofing contractors recommend a certain shingle brand?
How does the shingle brand impact your roof replacement?
The brand of shingle you choose for your roof replacement affects cost, material warranties, lifespan, and color/design options. All of the major shingle manufacturers have different “lines,” but the majority offer all three types of asphalt shingles.
However, some have more options for the different types of asphalt shingles. For example, CertainTeed offers multiple lines of luxury shingles (Grand Manor, Belmont, Carriage House, etc.), while Owens Corning offers one.
They also offer different material warranties based on “functions” specific to the brand of shingles. However, many have the same benefits (they do vary in quality), just called something different.
For example, both CertainTeed and GAF have an algae protection warranty, but CertainTeed's is called StreakFighter, while GAF’s is called StainGuard. The important thing to take away from this is that all shingle manufacturers offer different warranties, lengths of warranties, and shingle lines.
Just keep in mind there are differences in quality with the brands, but you’ll get different opinions based on who you talk to and their experiences.
How does a roofing contractor impact your roof replacement?
A roofing contractor impacts every aspect of your roof replacement, from the cost, length of workmanship warranty, quality of installation, and so much more. Every company is different, so everything really depends on who you hire.
For example, workmanship warranties vary from company to company and could be anywhere from 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, 25 years, or even a lifetime warranty. You should look for at least a 10-year workmanship warranty, but roofers who take real pride in their work offer a 25-year to lifetime warranty.
This is just one important example of how a roofing contractor impacts your roof replacement project. However, they play a role in everything from beginning to end.
Is choosing a shingle brand or roofing contractor more important?
Choosing a roofing contractor is the most important decision you’ll make for any roofing project. That's why you should care more about hiring the right roofing contractor than the shingle brand.
I’m not saying the shingle brand isn’t important. In fact, it’s very important and something to consider when getting a new roof.
But even if you get the best shingle possible, it won’t matter if you don’t hire a quality roofing contractor to install it. Most roofing contractors can even find the shingle you’re looking for or a comparable match.
That’s why you need to find a great roofing contractor first, then discuss shingle options, get their recommendations, and make the decision based on what’s best for you.
Why do roofing contractors recommend a certain shingle brand?
Most roofing contractors have a preferred brand, but the reasons vary. I recommend CertainTeed because I believe they have the best products and warranties available.
So, some roofers recommend a specific brand because they trust the product. On the other hand, some just stick with a brand and product that’s readily available with no supply chain issues.
However, a big reason roofing contractors usually recommend a specific brand is that they’re certified by them. This comes with some rebates and kickbacks, but being certified means they can also offer the best material warranties on your roof replacement.
Whatever the reason a roofing contractor recommends a certain manufacturer, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. The important thing is that they’re recommending a reputable brand and product.
How do you hire a reputable roofing contractor?
Now you know that the roofing contractor is the first and most important thing to worry about when getting a new roof. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t care about the shingle or brand, but the roofer impacts everything.
Unfortunately, the roofing industry is saturated in every part of the United States. While this means your area probably has a lot of options, it’s hard to spot a great roofer if you don’t know what to look for.
The last thing I want is for you to get taken advantage of by the roofing industry. That’s why I wrote another article with tips for choosing a roofer in your area.
