Are Architectural and Dimensional Asphalt Shingles the Same Thing?

Do you need a new asphalt roof? Do you keep seeing or hearing both “architectural” and “dimensional”?
This causes plenty of confusion if you don’t know roofing industry terminology. I understand it’s frustrating when it’s unclear and seems to be used interchangeably.
So, are architectural shingles and dimensional shingles the same thing?
For over 30 years, Bill Ragan Roofing has provided clear information to help homeowners avoid the confusion that comes with every roofing project. That’s why I’ll help you understand what architectural and dimensional shingles are.
By the end of this article, you’ll learn:
- Are architectural and dimensional asphalt shingles the same?
- 6 things to know about architectural and dimensional shingles
Are architectural and dimensional asphalt shingles the same?
Yes, architectural and dimensional asphalt shingles are the exact same thing. They are an asphalt-based roofing material consisting of fiberglass, tar, and granules on a fiberglass mat.
Their design provides a random pattern to give a roof dimension or simulate the look of a wood-shake roof with certain colors. And because they’re so common, you’ll hear it used interchangeably quite a bit.
So, whether a roofer says architectural or dimensional, they’re talking about the same type of shingle.
6 things to know about architectural and dimensional shingles
Now you know architectural shingles are just another name for dimensional shingles. However, just knowing they’re the same thing isn’t important when deciding if they’re the right roofing material for you.
So, let’s do a deep dive into architectural shingles. From here, I’ll use “architectural” simply because it’s the more common phrasing.
Let’s look at the 6 things you need to know about architectural asphalt shingles.
1. Architectural shingles are widely available
Architectural asphalt shingles are the most commonly used shingles in residential roofing. Being the most popular shingle is one thing, but they’re also the most common roofing material installed on homes in the United States.
Their popularity comes down to the quality they offer while still being affordable. Because of this, architectural shingles are widely available in the United States.
You only have to worry about whether certain colors or brands are available in your area.
2. The components that make up an architectural shingle roof system
While architectural shingles are the main material, they aren’t the only thing installed on your roof during a roof replacement. There are other components that combine with the shingles to create an entire roof system.
Along with the asphalt shingles, the components that form a roof system include:
- Roof decking
- Roof flashing
- Underlayment
- Drip edge
- Ice and water shield
- Ridge capping
- Roof vents
- Pipe boots
I guarantee you’ll have problems if your roof is missing just one of these components. That’s why it’s crucial not to look for the cheapest roof possible to avoid left-off materials, cut corners, and lazy workmanship.
3. How long do architectural shingles last?
A new roof increases home value and curb appeal, but the main return on investment is how long it lasts. Architectural asphalt shingles have a manufacturer-stated lifespan of 30 years.
However, an asphalt roof should realistically last around 80% of this stated lifespan. So, you can expect architectural asphalt shingles to last around 22-25 years.
Just know there are many factors that impact how long a roof actually lasts. But as long as it's properly installed with adequate attic ventilation, you invested in quality, and hired a reputable roofer, an architectural asphalt shingle roof should reach the lifespan above.
4. What warranties come with architectural shingles?
Architectural shingles come with a basic 30-year material warranty (prorated after 10 years) for manufacturer defects. While the defect warranty is the main one, architectural shingles also come with algae and wind resistance warranties.
However, there’s also an enhanced warranty if you get a single manufacturer’s components or accessories installed by a certified roofer. This 50-year non-prorated warranty ensures the manufacturer covers your entire roof system for the life of the roof.
This ensures that if just one component fails, they'll pay to replace your entire asphalt roof (labor and materials).
5. How much does an architectural shingle roof cost?
I can’t provide exact pricing for an architectural asphalt shingle roof without seeing the roof and measurements. With that in mind, I can give you a rough estimation of the budget you’ll need.
For a two-story house with a little complexity and good accessibility, you can expect an architectural asphalt shingle roof to cost around $5.86 per square foot. Just keep in mind that this price is for an entire roof system, including the shingles and other components plus labor costs.
However, other factors specific to your roof, home, and the roofing company you hire ultimately determine how much an architectural shingle roof costs. That’s why you’ll never get an exact price until you get an inspection from a local roofer.
6. Do architectural shingles need maintenance?
Just like a car needs tune-ups, architectural shingles need maintenance. It keeps the shingles and roof system fully functioning, catches future problems, and prevents leaks before they start.
Roof maintenance is also the perfect chance to clear sitting debris that can damage and shorten the shingle’s lifespan. The last thing you want is for a small problem to turn into an expensive repair and damage your home’s interior.
So, no matter the material, roof maintenance is crucial to maximizing any roof’s lifespan.
How do architectural shingles compare to the other types of asphalt shingles?
After reading this article, you know the main things every homeowner needs to know about architectural shingles. Understanding the lifespan, your warranty options, and more helps you determine if it’s the right shingle or material for you.
However, architectural shingles are just one type of asphalt shingle. So, how can you be sure you’re making the right decision if you don't know how they match up to the other options?
That’s why I wrote another article comparing all three types of asphalt shingles on key factors mentioned here.
