An asphalt shingle roof is the most common type of roofing material installed on homes around the country today. The main reason for this comes down to affordability and ease of installation.

But even though it’s considered affordable, a new shingle roof is still a large investment. The problem is knowing how much of an investment you’ll have to make.

For over 30 years, the team at Bill Ragan Roofing has taken pride in providing homeowners with all the information they need for their upcoming roof replacement. While the rest of the industry avoids cost questions, we have no problems answering them head-on.

Because of this, I’ll break down how much a shingle roof costs for the current year of 2023.

This article answers the following questions:

  • How much does a shingle roof cost in 2023?
  • What impacts the cost of a new shingle roof?
  • How much do other types of shingle roofs cost in 2023?

How much does a shingle roof cost in 2023?

There are three types of asphalt shingles: 3-tab, architectural, and luxury. The great thing about asphalt shingles is that they each offer a different price point to ensure you can find one that fits your budget.

Before getting to the pricing, just know that each cost per square foot number below includes everything, from materials to labor to dump fees. You need to also keep in mind that the numbers aren’t perfect due to the multitude of factors that go into pricing a roof replacement.

However, they will give you an idea of the budget you’ll need for a shingle roof in 2033.

3 tab asphalt shingle roof

For a one-story house with a basic up-and-over roof with no penetrations and no valleys, you can expect a 3-tab shingle roof to cost around $4.00 per square foot.

For a two-story house with a little complexity and good accessibility, you can expect an architectural shingle roof to cost around $5.86 per square foot.

luxury asphalt shingle roof

For a two-story house with a cut-up, complex roof, a steep pitch, and not easily accessible, you can expect a luxury shingle roof to cost around $8.50 per square foot.

A shingle roof will be a large investment, no matter which type of shingle you choose. If you’re looking for affordability without sacrificing quality, an architectural shingle roof is a great option.

But if you want to add more lifespan and curb appeal, a luxury shingle roof is the way to go.

What impacts the cost of a shingle roof?

Now you have an idea of how much a shingle roof costs in 2023. But remember, there are a lot of factors that go into the cost of a new shingle roof.

I already mentioned some factors, like shingle type, complexity, and accessibility. But this is just scratching the surface of the factors a roofing contractor keeps in mind when estimating the cost of a new shingle roof.

Below is a list of the major factors that impact a shingle roof’s cost:

While these factors help determine the cost of a shingle roof, every roofing contractor is different. So, you can expect to get a range of prices after talking to different roofing contractors

How much do other types of shingle roofs cost in 2023?

When most people hear “shingle”, they immediately think about asphalt. However, there are other shingle options you should consider.

Just know that these shingles come at a steeper price point. Let’s break down how much other popular residential shingles cost.

How much does a synthetic shingle roof cost in 2023?

Synthetic (aka composite) shingles are made of a synthetic polymer or recycled materials and mimic the look of cedar shake and slate shingles. No matter which style you choose, both types of synthetic shingles are large investments.

synthetic slate shingle roof

A synthetic shingle roof costs around $14.00-$20.00 per square foot. Even though it looks like real slate and cedar shake, a synthetic shingle roof will always be cheaper than the natural material it mimics.

But a synthetic shingle roof will still be a much larger investment than any of the asphalt shingles. So, you may want to avoid synthetic shingles and other premium roof systems if you’re looking for affordable options.

How much does a cedar shake shingle roof cost in 2023?

A cedar shake roof is a premium roof system made of natural wood (cedar) materials. What sets cedar shake shingles apart from other roof types is the curb appeal.

But the increased curb appeal comes at a very steep price point. A cedar shake shingle roof costs around $25.00 to $30.00 per square foot.

While the physical materials are expensive, the labor cost is very high because installing cedar shake shingles is an intensive process. The cost is also affected by the grade (quality) of the cedar shake shingle you choose, just like asphalt shingles.

How much does a slate shingle roof cost in 2023?

A slate shingle roof is a premium system made up of natural slate tiles and other materials. It’s one of the longest-lasting roof systems available to homeowners but also one of the most expensive.

For labor and materials, a slate shingle roof costs around $15.00 per square foot on the low end and can very quickly get up to around $30.00 or more per square foot.

Just know that a home must be able to handle the weight of a slate shingle roof. If it can’t handle the weight the way it is, you’ll have to retrofit it before the roof can be installed.

This requires approval by a structural engineer before the work starts. If your home ends up needing retrofitting or new framing, the cost of a slate shingle roof will skyrocket.

Now you know how much the different types of shingle roofs cost. Like most homeowners, you’ll probably go with the commonly used asphalt shingle.

But it’s well worth the investment if you can afford one of the premium shingle roof systems. While I say it’s worth the investment, I understand that pricing is a huge factor in the decision-making process.
